What is Amlexanox?
|
|
Amlexanox
is used to treat ulcers of the mouth called aphthous
ulcers or canker sores. It decreases the time ulcers
take to heal. Because amlexanox decreases the healing
time, it also decreases the pain you feel.
Amlexanox is
used as a paste in the mouth to treat aphthous ulcers
(canker sores).

Amlexanox
mode of action
|
|
Amlexanox
comes as a beige-colored paste. Amlexanox should be used
as soon as possible after noticing symptoms of an ulcer.
Amlexanox is usually applied four times a day, following
brushing and flossing after breakfast, lunch, dinner,
and at bedtime. Squeeze 1/4 inch of the paste on your
finger. With gentle pressure, dab amlexanox onto each
ulcer in the mouth. Wash hands immediately after using
amlexanox. Amlexanox is only used until the ulcer has
healed, usually within 10 days. Contact your physician
or dentist if significant healing has not occurred
within 10 days.

Amlexanox
side effects
|
|
Although
side effects from amlexanox are not common, they can
occur. Tell your doctor or dentist if any of these
symptoms are severe or do not go away:

slight
pain, stinging, or burning of the skin that comes
and goes
|
|
nausea
|
|
diarrhea
|
|
rash
|
|
|
|
|

Special Conditions To Observe
|
|
Pregnancy-
Amlexanox
has not been studied in humans. However, studies in
animals have not found that it causes any birth defects
or other problems.
|
|
|
Older adults-
Many
medicines have not been studied specifically in older
people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work
exactly the same way they do in younger adults. There is
no specific information comparing use of amlexanox in
the elderly with use in other age groups.
|
|
|
Breast-feeding-
It is not known whether amlexanox passes into breast milk in humans.
However, it does pass into the milk in lactating
animals. Although most medicines pass into human breast
milk in small amounts, many of them may be used safely
while breast-feeding. Mothers who are taking this
medicine and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this
with their doctor.

Children-
There is no
specific information comparing use of amlexanox in
children with use in other age groups.
