What is Doxazosin Mesylate?

Doxazosin Mesylate is used for the control of elevated blood pressure (hypertension) and for benign prostatic hyperplasia (noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland). Doxazosin Mesylate is an inhibitor of the alpha 1 adrenergic nervous system. It is in a class of drugs referred to as alpha-blockers that includes alfusosin (Uroxatral), terazosin (Hytrin), tamsulosin (Flomax), and prazosin (Minipress). Elevated blood pressure (hypertension) is lowered as the action of these nerves, which promote constriction of blood vessels, is blocked. Doxazosin Mesylate was also found to relax the muscles around the prostate gland, which is also under the influence of the alpha-adrenergic portion nervous system. This can makes urination easier for men affected by enlarged prostate glands.

How does Doxazosin Mesylate work?

Blocks the alpha-1 (postjunctional) adrenergic receptors resulting in a decrease in systemic vascular resistance and a corresponding decrease in BP. Peak plasma levels: 2-3 hr. Peak effect: 2-6 hr. Significantly bound (98%) to plasma proteins. Metabolized in the liver to active and inactive metabolites, which are excreted through the feces and urine. T1/2: 22 hr.

Doxazosin Mesylate mode of action

Doxazosin Mesylate should be taken at doses specifically directed by your physician. This medication can be taken with or without food. Doxazosin Mesylate should be taken the same time each day to maintain proper blood levels. Do not take Doxazosin Mesylate within two hours of taking an antacid. If stopped you must taper the dose. Store in a dry place at 30 degrees C (86 F).

Doxazosin Mesylate side effects

An uncommon but dangerous side effect of Doxazosin Mesylate is a drop in the white blood cells, which normally help to fight infection. Liver damage is uncommon. Dizziness and fainting can occur if the blood pressure is lowered too fast. Swelling of the ankles and fatigue may occur. Most persons should have periodic blood studies while taking Doxazosin Mesylate. This medication will rarely cause nausea, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, nasal congestion and sexual dysfunction. Consult your pharmacist and physician for additional drug interactions. This medication should be taken while pregnant only if strongly indicated.

Dizziness (most frequent), syncope, vertigo, lightheadedness, edema, palpitation, arrhythmia, postural hypotension, tachycardia, peripheral ischemia. CNS: Fatigue, headache, paresthesia, kinetic disorders, ataxia, somnolence, nervousness, depression, insomnia. Musculoskeletal: Arthralgia, arthritis, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, myalgia, hypertonia. GU: Polyuria, sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, urinary frequency. GI: Nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, constipation, dyspepsia, flatulence, abdominal pain, vomiting. Respiratory: Fatigue or malaise, rhinitis, epistaxis, dyspnea. Miscellaneous: Rash, pruritus, flushing, abnormal vision, conjunctivitis, eye pain, tinnitus, chest pain, asthenia, facial edema, generalized pain, slight weight gain.

Doxazosin Mesylate Special Conditions To Observe

Use with caution during lactation, in impaired hepatic function, or in those taking drugs known to influence hepatic metabolism. Safety and effectiveness have not been demonstrated in children. Due to the possibility of severe hypotension, do not use the 2-, 4-, and 8-mg tablets for initial therapy.
