The following information is provided for general information purposes ONLY.

What is Gatifloxacin?

Gatifloxacin is in a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It eliminates bacteria that cause many infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis; sinus, respiratory tract, and urinary tract infections; and sexually transmitted diseases. Antibiotics will not work against colds, flu, or other viral infections.

How does Gatifloxacin work?

Gatifloxacin comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once daily for up to 14 days with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take gatifloxacin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

The history of Gatifloxacin

Gatifloxacin is also used occasionally to eliminate bacteria that cause infections in the skin and prostate. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.

What is Gatifloxacin used for?

Gatifloxacin inhibits the activity of bacterial enzymes (DNA gyrase and a topoisomerase) that are necessary for proper DNA formation and replication. This fights infection by preventing bacteria from reproducing.

Gatifloxacin mode of action

For most infections: 400 mg once a day for 7 to 10 days. For community-acquired pneumonia: 400 mg a day for 7 to 14 days. For uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 400 mg as a one-time dose or 200 mg once a day for 3 days. For gonorrhea: 400 mg as a one-time dose. For those with impaired kidney function: Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage.

Gatifloxacin Special Conditions To Observe

Pregnancy: In some animal tests, gatifloxacin has caused birth defects. Adequate studies in humans have not been done. It should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefits clearly justify the risks. Before you take gatifloxacin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Breast Feeding: Gatifloxacin may pass into breast milk and cause serious side effects in the nursing infant; use of the drug is discouraged when nursing.

Infants and Children: Gatifloxacin is not recommended for use by persons under the age of 18.
