What is
Mirtazepine? |
|
Mirtazepine is a medication that was
approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for
the treatment of depression in June 1997. Mirtazepine
was the first drug in a new class of antidepressants
with a unique ability to target specific serotonin
receptors. Along with its efficacy in the treatment of
moderate to severe depression, Mirtazepine has proven to
be effective for treating anxiety, motor retardation,
and cognitive and sleep disturbances associated with
depression. |
|
|
|
Mirtazepine
interaction |
|
Mirtazepine does not cause problematic interactions with
most other drugs and it is frequently prescribed in
combination with other antidepressants. Use of other
drugs that cause drowsiness (antihistamines,
prescription painkillers, Valium, Xanax) may increase
this effect and impair driving or other motor or
coordination skills. Use with central nervous system
stimulants (Fastin, Dexedrine, Ritalin) may cause an
increase in agitation or even mania, especially in
bipolar patients. |
|
|
|
Immunocompromised consumers, consumers with HIV, and
consumers on steroid therapy should call their physician
at the first sign of sore throat, fever, chills, sores
in and around the soft tissue of the mouth, or any
general flu-like symptoms. |
|
|
|
What is
Mirtazepine used for? |
|
Mirtazepine,
an antidepressant or mood elevator, is used to treat
depression. This medication is sometimes prescribed for
other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more
information. |
|
|
|
How to
take Mirtazepine? |
|
Mirtazepine comes as a tablet and as a disintegrating
tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day
at bedtime. It may be taken with or without food. Follow
the directions on your prescription label carefully, and
ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do
not understand. Take Mirtazepine exactly as directed. Do
not take more or less of it or take it more often than
prescribed by your doctor. |
|
|
|
To take a
Mirtazepine disintegrating tablet, open the blister pack
with dry hands and place the tablet on your tongue. The
tablet will disintegrate on the tongue and can be
swallowed with saliva. No water is needed to swallow
disintegrating tablets. Once the tablet is removed from
the blister pack, it cannot be stored. Do not split
Mirtazepine disintegrating tablets. |
|
|
|
Continue
to take Mirtazepine even if you feel well. Do not stop
taking Mirtazepine without talking to your doctor,
especially if you have taken large doses for a long
time. Your doctor probably will decrease your dose
gradually. This drug must be taken regularly for a few
weeks before its full effect is felt. |
