The following information is provided for general information purposes ONLY.

What is Propiverine?

The active ingredient propiverine hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called an anticholinergic or antimuscarinic muscle relaxant. It works by relaxing the involuntary muscle that is found in the wall of the bladder.

What is Propiverine used for?

Propantheline relaxes the muscle in the wall of the bladder by blocking receptors called cholinergic or muscarinic receptors that are found on the surface of the muscle cells. This prevents a chemical called acetylcholine from acting on these receptors. Acetylcholine acting on these receptors normally causes the muscle in the bladder wall to contract, and the bladder to empty. By reducing this, propantheline helps the muscle in the bladder wall to relax. This reduces unstable, involuntary contractions of the bladder, and thereby increases the capacity of the bladder to hold urine. This in turn reduces the need to pass urine.

Propiverine is used to treat urinary frequency, urinary urgency and incontinence in people with unstable bladders. This condition may have no known cause (idiopathic bladder instability), or may be due to problems with the nerve supply to the bladder following a spinal cord injury (neurogenic bladder).

Propiverine side effects

Constipation ; Blurred vision ; Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia) ; Difficulty in passing urine (urinary retention) ; Dry mouth ; Drowsiness ; Restlessness ; Low blood pressure (hypotension) ; False perceptions of things that are not really there (hallucinations) ; Rash (allergic reaction).
